Office Assistant Absconds with Admission Funds, Leaving 33 Students in Limbo at Tahirpur Girls’ High School and College

Kaushik Pal, an office assistant at the college section of Tahirpur Girls’ High School and College in Sunamganj, has allegedly absconded with over a lakh of taka, including admission fees collected from students for Class XI enrollment. Despite collecting the fees, he failed to submit the applications, leaving the admission process of 33 students in uncertainty.

Local residents allege that Kaushik Pal has been addicted to online gambling for a long time, incurring debts worth lakhs of taka from various businessmen in Tahirpur Bazar. Many have been searching for him to recover their money. After it was revealed that he did not process the admission applications despite collecting fees, he went into hiding.

According to sources from the school, after the SSC results were published in 2025, many successful students applied for admission to the college section. Kaushik Pal took responsibility for processing the applications of 33 students, assuring them that their admissions were secured. He collected 750 taka from each student. The admission process occurred in three phases: the first from July 30 to August 15, the second from August 23 to 25, and the third from August 31 to September 1. However, none of the students received any confirmation messages regarding their applications. Concerned, the students informed the headteacher.

The acting headteacher, Mazaharul Islam, contacted the Sylhet Education Board and discovered that no applications were submitted for the 33 students. As a result, the admission of these students for the 2025-26 academic year remains uncertain. Additionally, Kaushik Pal has been missing for the past 15 days with the admission fees and other college funds amounting to over a lakh of taka, including 18,000 taka from the Sonali Seba fees of sixth and seventh-grade students.

Students Morsheda Akter Alo and Tasmiya Akter Trina stated, “Kaushik Pal took responsibility for our applications and collected 750 taka from each of us. But he did not confirm our applications, and we doubt if he even submitted them.”

Kaushik Pal admitted to errors in the admission process but provided no clear response regarding absconding with the funds, abruptly ending the call. Acting Headteacher Mazaharul Islam said, “Last year, Kaushik Pal successfully processed many students’ applications. This year, as the new headteacher, I trusted him when he assured me there was no need to worry. But when no admission letters arrived, I checked with the Sylhet Board and learned no applications were submitted.”

Mehedi Hasan Manik, the Upazila Executive Officer and president of the school, stated, “We summoned Kaushik Pal and the headteacher. Kaushik has committed to ensuring the students’ admissions. If he fails, action will be taken against him.”
