In a landmark verdict, the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 sentenced caretaker Saeed Molla (55) to life imprisonment for raping a 13-year-old girl, the daughter of a tenant, in Aganagar, South Keraniganj. The judgment was delivered on Wednesday (September 3) by Judge Munshi Md. Moshiar Rahman.
Along with the life sentence, Saeed Molla was fined one lakh taka, with an additional year of non-labor imprisonment if the fine remains unpaid. Tribunal prosecutor Md. Ershad Alam (George) stated that the court ordered the Dhaka District Magistrate to sell Saeed’s movable and immovable assets to recover the fine amount for the victim. Following the verdict, Saeed was sent to prison with a conviction warrant.
According to the case details, the victim lived with her family in a rented house near Aganagar’s small mosque in South Keraniganj. Saeed Molla, employed as the caretaker of the building, frequently made inappropriate advances toward the girl. On August 2, 2021, around 2:00 PM, he lured her to the rooftop under the pretext of looking for her brother and raped her. On September 23, 2021, he raped her again after intimidating her. The victim informed her family, and her mother filed a case at South Keraniganj Police Station the following day.
On August 31, 2022, South Keraniganj Police Station’s Sub-Inspector Ali Jinnah submitted a charge sheet accusing Saeed Molla after completing the investigation. The court framed charges against him, and the trial began. During the proceedings, the court recorded testimonies from eight witnesses.
The verdict has sparked hope for justice in the community, though the incident has left locals in deep grief and outrage.
