A 27-year-old youth named Durjoy Chowdhury allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself with his shirt on an iron grille inside the lockup of Chakaria Police Station in Cox’s Bazar. The incident is believed to have occurred between midnight and 4:00 AM on Thursday (August 21).
Durjoy Chowdhury, son of Komol Chowdhury from Bhoramuhuri Hindupara in Ward No. 4 of Chakaria Municipality, was employed as an office assistant-cum-computer operator at Chakaria Government High School.
According to police sources, Rabeya Khanam, the acting headmistress of Chakaria Government High School, filed a complaint against Durjoy on Thursday night, accusing him of embezzling 2.83 lakh taka. Durjoy was present at the police station with the headmistress when the complaint was lodged.
Durjoy’s family alleged that Rabeya Khanam brought him to the police station, handed him over to the police, and pressured the Officer-in-Charge (OC) to detain him in custody. Subsequently, between midnight and 4:00 AM, Durjoy reportedly used his shirt to hang himself from the lockup’s door grille.
Police stated that the body was discovered in the early hours when another arrested suspect was brought to the lockup. In the presence of Rupayan Deb, Assistant Commissioner (Land) and president of the school’s managing committee, a police report was prepared, and the body was recovered and sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
On Friday morning, Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Jasim Uddin visited the scene. Assistant Commissioner (Land) Rupayan Deb said that on Thursday afternoon, the headmistress brought Durjoy to him. During questioning, Durjoy admitted to misappropriating the funds, after which the police were informed to take legal action.
Chakaria Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shafiqul Islam stated, “Around 8:00 PM, the headmistress brought Durjoy to the station. During initial questioning, he admitted his guilt, and we detained him under Section 54. After registering the complaint, we went out for operations. In the early hours, Durjoy’s body was found hanging in the lockup.”
