Due to the lack of a proper drainage system, persistent waterlogging in front of the Bagha Upazila area of Rajshahi has turned the highway into a potential death trap. Several days of continuous rain have left local residents in misery, with large potholes forming on the road and stagnant water creating hazardous conditions.
On Friday, heavy rainfall caused severe waterlogging in front of Bagha Model High School and the Shahdoula Government College Market. Poorly planned drainage construction has resulted in elevated drains, preventing rainwater from draining off the road and instead causing it to accumulate rapidly.
Akbar Hossain, a resident of Bagha municipality, expressed his frustration: “We are completely at the mercy of this waterlogging. Huge potholes have formed, and because the drains are higher than the road, even light rain results in flooding.”
Ali Hossain, a local CNG driver, added, “After a little rain, driving becomes extremely difficult. From the Bagha Upazila office to the old Rural Electricity Office, it’s a challenge to even turn the wheels.”
Despite substantial spending on the drainage system, residents say it has failed to resolve the waterlogging issue.
In response, Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Bagha Municipality Administrator Shammi Akhter said, “Work on the highway has already begun. Once it's completed, we expect these problems will be resolved.”
