In a disturbing incident in Bande Gawail, Somvagh Union of Dhaka’s Dharmarai Upazila, a widow was raped, and a village arbitration was held to address the issue. The arbitration imposed a fine of 60,000 taka on the perpetrator as compensation for the victim’s honor. However, the victim did not receive any of the money, as the arbitrators allegedly misappropriated it, deciding to buy a cow for consumption with the funds.
The victim filed a written complaint at Dharmarai Police Station on Friday (August 22). The incident occurred on Thursday (August 21) night.
According to local sources, a factory worker named Salauddin entered the widow’s house on Thursday night and raped her. Hearing her cries, nearby residents apprehended the perpetrator and beat him. Subsequently, a village arbitration meeting was held, where a fine of 60,000 taka was imposed on the rapist. However, the victim alleged that she did not receive any of the fined amount, as the arbitrators pocketed the money.
The arbitrators admitted, “It is true that we imposed a 60,000 taka fine for the rape. However, we did not misappropriate the money. It was decided to use the money to buy a cow for consumption.”
Dharmarai Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Monirul Islam stated, “Upon learning about the incident, I sent police to the scene to investigate. No one involved in this incident will be spared. Settling a rape case through village arbitration is a crime.”
