In a tragic incident in Kanchannagar Union of Fatikchhari Upazila, Chattogram, a 15-year-old boy named Md. Rihan Uddin Mahin was beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of theft. The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday (August 22) at the Cheingar Bridge area of Sakor Ali Talukdar Bari. Mahin’s father, Lokman, and two other teenagers, Manik and Rahat, were also severely injured during the attack.
Mahin was the son of Muhammad Lokman from the same area. The Fatikchhari Police Station has detained two suspects, Md. Noman (23) and Azad (35), in connection with the incident.
According to police and local sources, Mahin, Manik, and Rahat were returning to their area around 3:00 AM on Thursday in a CNG auto-rickshaw when a group of local youths chased them. The teenagers sought refuge on the roof of an under-construction building, but the mob, accusing them of theft, dragged them to Cheingar Bridge and beat them relentlessly until morning. When Mahin’s father, Lokman, attempted to rescue his son, he too was assaulted. Mahin succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Mahin’s aunt, Sukhi Begum, stated, “My nephew asked for water, but they didn’t even give him that. They tied him with ropes and beat him to death.”
The owner of the under-construction building, Mobarak, clarified, “No theft occurred at our house. I woke up hearing the commotion and saw locals taking away a few teenagers.”
Local Union Parishad member Abdul Kader remarked, “He was beaten to death on suspicion of theft, though this is unlawful.”
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Fatikchhari Police Station, Nur Ahmed, said, “In the early hours, Mahin and his friends arrived in the area by CNG. A group of locals attacked them. The teenagers fled to the roof of an under-construction building, but the mob brought them down to Cheingar Bridge and beat them. Mahin died on the spot. The other three are receiving treatment.
