The incident took place on Wednesday (August 13) morning in Napiter Bazar, under Khorddakomarpur Union.
The accused, Golap Miya (36), is the son of the late Toyez Uddin from South Chak Daria village in Idilpur Union. He is reportedly a nephew of Awami League leader and former Gaibandha-3 MP Umme Kulsum Smriti. Locals claim Golap has been involved in drug trafficking and smuggling for a long time.
According to eyewitnesses, Asim, son of hotel owner Abu Bakkar Siddik, was working at the hotel as usual. On Wednesday morning, Golap Miya visited the hotel for breakfast and attempted to leave without paying the bill. When Asim demanded payment for the meal and outstanding dues, an argument ensued, escalating into a physical altercation. During the dispute, Golap pulled out a pistol from his waist and fired three shots at Asim. As Asim fell to the ground injured, Selina Begum, a female employee at the hotel, rushed to help him, and Golap shot at her as well. Hearing the gunshots, locals rushed to the scene, prompting Golap to flee. The injured were taken to Gaibandha General Hospital by bystanders.
Dr. Asif Ur Rahman, Residential Medical Officer at Gaibandha General Hospital, stated that a bullet passed through the muscle of Selina’s thigh. Asim sustained a graze wound below his scrotum on the inner thigh, causing significant skin damage. Both victims are currently stable.
Sadullapur Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tajuddin Khandaker said, “Efforts are underway to arrest Golap. We are investigating whether he used a pistol, a gun, or another type of weapon. His political affiliations and status are also under scrutiny.”
The incident has created panic and tension in the area. Locals have demanded the swift arrest of Golap Miya and exemplary punishment.
