In Jashore’s Chougachha Upazila, a physically disabled housewife from a minority community has accused two local men of raping her. The victim filed a case at the Chougachha Police Station on Wednesday (August 13). The incident occurred on August 1 in Sukhpukuria village.
The accused are Safiruddin (40), son of Omar Ali, and Bablu (35), son of Bajlur Rashid, both residents of the same village.
According to the victim’s family members, the woman is physically disabled and has a one-and-a-half-year-old child. On the morning of the incident, Bablu came to their house and informed the woman that her husband had left bananas and wood apples at Safiruddin’s house. Initially, she ignored the information, but Bablu returned and repeated the same claim.
Trusting Bablu’s words, the woman, carrying her toddler, went to Safiruddin’s house to retrieve the items. Upon reaching, Safiruddin asked her to enter the house. When her child began crying, Bablu gave the child a guava to eat. Seizing the opportunity, Safiruddin forcibly dragged the woman inside the house and, with Bablu’s assistance, raped her. During the assault, she was beaten and threatened with death.
Frightened, the victim initially did not disclose the incident but later confided in her family. Efforts to resolve the matter through a local arbitration meeting failed, prompting the victim to file a case at Chougachha Police Station.
Local Union Parishad member Parvina Begum said, “The accused are not of good character and are often involved with intoxicants. I demand a thorough investigation to ensure justice for the victim.”
Chougachha Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Anwar Hossain told Kalbela, “A case has been filed based on the complaint, and an investigating officer has been assigned. Efforts are underway to arrest the accused, and the victim has been sent for a medical examination.”
