Two Dead After Consuming Toxic Spirit in Cumilla’s Muradnagar

In a tragic incident, two individuals died after consuming toxic spirit in the Bangra Bazar Thana area of Muradnagar Upazila, Cumilla. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning (August 13) in the Bakhraabad area of Ramchandrapur North Union.

The deceased have been identified as Tapan Chandra Sarkar (50), son of the late Mahadeb Sarkar, and Palash Chakraborty (38), son of the late Nityan Chakraborty, both residents of South Bakhraabad village in Ramchandrapur North Union.

According to locals and police, Tapan Chandra Sarkar and Palash Chakraborty fell ill after consuming a toxic spirit-like substance in the early hours of Wednesday. They were rushed to Muradnagar Upazila Health Complex by their family members in the morning, where doctors declared Palash Chakraborty dead on arrival.

Tapan Chandra Sarkar, whose condition was critical, was referred to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Unfortunately, he passed away on the way to the hospital.

Upon receiving the news, Bangra Bazar Thana police recovered Palash’s body from Ramchandrapur Mahashmashan in the afternoon and took it to the police station. However, Tapan’s body had already been cremated before the police arrived, making it impossible to recover.

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bangra Bazar Thana, Mahfuzur Rahman, said, “Preliminary investigations suggest that the two died after consuming a spirit-like substance from a homeopathic shop. We have recovered Palash’s body, but Tapan’s body was cremated, so it could not be retrieved.”

He added that legal action is being taken in this regard, and Palash’s body will be sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for an autopsy on Thursday (August 14).
