Abu Bakkar Siddique Rana (35) has confessed to the murder of his wife, Urmi Khatun (30), in a rented house in Kushtia town’s Housing area. Kushtia Model Thana police arrested Rana around 2:30 AM on Tuesday from the Mazampur Gate area of the town.
According to the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kushtia Model Thana, Mosharraf Hossain, during initial interrogation, Rana admitted that he was enraged due to suspicions of his wife’s extramarital affair. On the night of Thursday, August 7, an altercation between the couple escalated, leading Rana to beat Urmi and strangle her to death. He then locked the house from the outside and fled. On Saturday, August 9, around 10 PM, police recovered Urmi’s body from a rented house in Housing F Block.
The deceased, Urmi Khatun, was the daughter of Mahim Mondal from Gopalpur village in Kushtia Sadar Upazila’s Jiarakhi Union. Approximately five years ago, she entered her second marriage with Rana Khan from Poradah in Kushtia’s Mirpur Upazila. The couple resided in a rented house in the Housing area and ran a clothing and food shop near City College.
Urmi’s brother, Abu Sayed, alleged that Rana was a drug addict and had been imprisoned multiple times due to his addiction. Frequent domestic disputes plagued their relationship. He claimed Urmi was killed by being beaten and strangled.
