Former Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Police Sachin Moulik has been arrested in connection with the murder case of Golam Nafiz, who was killed by police gunfire in Dhaka’s Farmgate area. Members of the Detective Branch (DB) of Police detained him from Mahalchhari in Khagrachhari on Thursday (August 21). A Khagrachhari police official confirmed the arrest.
Following the July uprising, Sachin Moulik was attached to Mahalchhari-6 APBn. At the time of the incident, he was serving as the Additional Deputy Commissioner of the Tejgaon Zone under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). A warrant for his arrest was issued by the International Crimes Tribunal in connection with the ongoing murder case.
According to reports, Golam Nafiz was killed by police gunfire in the Farmgate area on the afternoon of August 4, 2024. A photograph of him lying on a rickshaw, with the Bangladesh flag tied around his head, went viral, turning him into a prominent symbol of the student-people’s uprising. Nafiz, who had passed his SSC from Banani Bidyaniketan School and College, was enrolled in the 11th grade at Dhaka’s Navy College. While being transported to the hospital by a rickshaw puller, he succumbed to his injuries.
Sachin Moulik’s name emerged during the ongoing investigation. He is a member of the 33rd BCS Police Cadre. Before the fall of the Awami League government, he was serving in the DMP’s Tejgaon Zone and was actively involved in field operations during the July uprising. Moulik joined the Bangladesh Civil Service as an Assistant Superintendent of Police on August 7, 2014.
