Marufa Akter, a garment worker, was the second wife of Md. Mizanur Rahman, son of Md. Sultan Mia from the same village. Mizanur operates a pharmacy in the area.
Marufa’s younger sister, Nazma Akter, recounted, “Around 2:30 AM, neighbors started shouting about a fire. When we reached the scene, the main gate of the house was locked. Locals broke the gate and entered, only to find the doors of two rooms also locked. They broke those doors and tried to extinguish the fire, but by then, my sister had been burned to death.”
Neighbors reported that the couple frequently quarreled, and despite multiple community mediation attempts, their disputes remained unresolved. Marufa’s brother, Mohammad Abu Taher, alleged, “For the last 15 days, Mizanur did not allow my sister to leave the house. She was burned to death after petrol was poured on her.”
Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Abdul Barik stated, “Mizanur fled after ensuring Marufa’s death around 2:30 AM. The CID’s Crime Scene Unit has visited the site to collect evidence. Police are conducting operations to apprehend Mizanur Rahman, and legal proceedings are underway.” The body has been sent for autopsy.
