The Attorney General further stated, “If any dictator wants to pursue a PhD in lying, they should learn from the fallen Hasina. If an association of the world’s dictators were formed, Sheikh Hasina would be its president. For the sake of Bangladesh’s future and future generations, we demand the maximum punishment for the dictator and her accomplices.” During his speech, he presented examples of the fates of various dictators worldwide to the court.
The trial began at 11:30 AM on Sunday under the leadership of Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumdar in the three-member International Crimes Tribunal-1. The other two members are Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Md. Mohammad Mohitul Haque. The proceedings are being broadcast live on the tribunal’s Facebook page.
The case stems from allegations of widespread atrocities and mass killings by law enforcement and armed members of Hasina’s Awami League during the student-led protests and mass uprising in July-August 2024. Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam alleged that Sheikh Hasina was the “mastermind, conductor, and superior commander” of this “coordinated, widespread, and systematic attack.”
Sheikh Hasina is currently in exile in India, and three arrest warrants have been issued for her. She and her party have dismissed the allegations as politically motivated.
