The deceased have been identified as Morshida Begum (55), mother of Oman expatriate Bahar Uddin; his wife Kabita (24); his daughter Mim Akter (2); his sister-in-law Laboni Akter (30); his grandmother Foyzunnesa (80); and his nieces Reshmi Akter (8) and Lamia (9), all residents of Choupolli village in Hajirpara Union, Lakshmipur. The injured include Bahar Uddin and the microbus driver, among five others.
According to police and witnesses, Bahar Uddin had returned to Bangladesh from Oman, and his family went to the airport to receive him on Tuesday afternoon. They were traveling back to Lakshmipur in a microbus when, in the early hours of Wednesday, the vehicle reached the Jagdishpur area. The driver lost control, causing the microbus to plunge into a roadside canal. Seven people died, either at the scene or later in various hospitals.
Mobarak Hossain Bhuiyan, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chandraganj Highway Police, confirmed that the victims’ bodies have been taken home by their relatives. Legal action will be taken regarding the incident.
