Misinformation Campaign Identified Involving Old Indian Rape Video Falsely Linked to Bangladesh

The Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB)’s Fact-Check and Media Research Team, ‘BanglaFact,’ has identified an attempt to spread misinformation by circulating an old video of a rape incident in India, falsely claiming it occurred in Bangladesh.

According to the BanglaFact investigation team, an old video depicting a rape incident in India is being misrepresented as a recent event in Bangladesh and is being widely shared on the internet. The video shows a woman and two young men attempting to strip a young woman.

BanglaFact’s investigation confirmed that the video does not depict a rape incident in Bangladesh. In reality, the footage is from an incident in May 2021, where a Bangladeshi woman was raped in Bengaluru, India. By conducting a reverse image search on key frames of the viral video, BanglaFact found a matching scene in a report published on May 29, 2021, by the media outlet ‘NewsBangla24.’

The report revealed that on May 19 and 20, 2021, a Bangladeshi woman was raped in a house in Kankanagar, East Bengaluru. The video of this incident later went viral online. With the help of an acquaintance, the victim fled to Kerala, where she was later rescued by Bengaluru Police with assistance from Kerala Police in the Kozhikode area. Six individuals, including two women, were arrested in connection with the case. Bengaluru Police confirmed that all the accused were Bangladeshi nationals.

According to BanglaFact, Bengaluru Police Deputy Commissioner S.D. Sharanappa told the media at the time, “The Bangladeshi woman who was sexually assaulted has been brought back to Bengaluru from Kozhikode, Kerala. Her statement will be recorded by Bengaluru Police.” Similar details were also reported by ‘The Daily Star,’ ‘Prothom Alo,’ and ‘Amader Somoy’ at the time.
