An 8-month-old child named Safuan died after a betel nut got stuck in his throat in Madarganj upazila of Jamalpur. The incident occurred around 10:00 am on Friday (August 15) in Bajiterpara area of Adarvita Union.
According to family sources, Safuan had recently come with his mother to visit the house of his maternal grandfather, Suruj Mia. On Friday morning, while playing indoors, the infant suddenly put a whole betel nut in his mouth. It became lodged in his throat, blocking his airway.
Family members tried to remove the betel nut but failed. They rushed him to Madarganj Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Dr. Monjurul Bari Rakib, in charge of the emergency department at the health complex, said a large betel nut was found in the child’s throat. He confirmed that Safuan had died from suffocation before reaching the hospital.
