Housewife Sumana Commits Suicide in Dinajpur’s Ghoraghat: Investigation Underway

In a tragic incident, Sumana Akter, a housewife, took her own life in Choudhury Gopalpur village under Palsha Union of Ghoraghat Upazila, Dinajpur. The incident occurred around 9:30 PM on Tuesday (August 26).

Sumana Akter was the daughter of Sultan Miah from Chatshal Sonarpara village in Palsha Union. According to family sources, Sumana’s parents work in a garment factory in Dhaka, and she had been living with her grandparents since childhood. On August 18, she married Abdus Sobhan from a neighboring village and was residing at her husband’s home. On Tuesday morning, she visited her grandparents’ house with her husband.

It is reported that while everyone was watching TV at night, Sumana went to an adjacent room and took her life by hanging herself with a scarf. Around 12:30 AM, family members found her hanging and informed the police. The police recovered her body from the scene.

Local Union Parishad member Shahidul Islam stated that Sumana’s grandfather, Mozaffar Hossain, had arranged her marriage with Abdus Sobhan a few days ago. This was Sumana’s second marriage; her first marriage to a cousin ended in divorce two years ago. Similarly, this was also Abdus Sobhan’s second marriage, as he had divorced his first wife three months earlier. Shahidul added, “We are unable to understand why Sumana took this step.”

Ghoraghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nazmul Haque confirmed that the body was recovered, and a post-mortem examination has been conducted. An unnatural death case is being processed at the police station, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of her death.
