DUCSU VP Candidate Jalal Ahmad Expelled for Stabbing Roommate

Jalal Ahmad, an independent vice-president (VP) candidate in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election, has been expelled from Haji Muhammad Muhsin Hall following allegations of stabbing his roommate. The incident occurred late Tuesday night (August 26) at the hall. The victim, Rabiul Haque, a student of the 2018-19 session in the Political Science Department, was injured in the attack.

Hall Provost Md. Sirajul Islam immediately announced Jalal’s expulsion. Jalal, a student of the Television and Film Department at Dhaka University, faces severe consequences. The provost stated, “Such a heinous act warrants his expulsion from the hall. Steps will also be taken to cancel his studentship.”

Eyewitnesses reported that the incident stemmed from a long-standing dispute between Jalal Ahmad and Rabiul Haque. Rabiul is currently receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Recounting the incident, Rabiul said, “Around 12:30 AM, Jalal entered the room, turned on the light, and started making noise, which disturbed my sleep. I told him I had to go to the library in the morning and that his noise was causing problems. He got angry, called me ‘illegal’ and ‘outsider,’ and when I protested, he stabbed me. I managed to defend myself somehow.”

Following the incident, the university administration handed Jalal Ahmad over to the police. Proctor Saifuddin Ahmad stated, “Legal action will be taken against Jalal as per the law. This incident will not affect the upcoming DUCSU election.” Regarding previous complaints against Jalal, he added, “I cannot comment on past actions at this moment, but all matters will be thoroughly investigated following this incident.”

Many students have demanded the resignation of the Haji Muhammad Muhsin Hall Provost over the incident. The proctor noted, “I have seen students demanding the provost’s resignation. If they formally raise their demands with the Vice-Chancellor on Wednesday, appropriate measures will be considered.”
