Gun Attack on Businessman’s Home in Hathazari Over Alleged Extortion Demand

Armed assailants opened fire at the residence of a businessman in Hathazari upazila of Chattogram on Wednesday, allegedly over an unpaid extortion demand. The victim, Md Jahangir Alam, who owns a brick kiln and a real estate company, claimed that the attack was carried out after he refused to pay Tk 50 lakh as extortion.

The incident occurred around noon at Jahangir’s house in Uttar Mekhal village under the Mekhal Union. Following the shooting, both district and local police visited the scene to investigate.

According to the victim’s family and police sources, Jahangir Alam had received a call via WhatsApp about 15 days ago demanding Tk 50 lakh in extortion. At the time, he did not take the threat seriously. However, after the shooting, he now believes that the attack was carried out by the same extortionists in retaliation for not paying.

Eyewitnesses reported that six unidentified armed men arrived on two motorcycles and stopped in front of the house. Four of them scaled the boundary wall and fired several rounds at the two-storey building before quickly fleeing the scene. At the time of the incident, the main gate of the house was locked, and no one was inside. Neighbors said the family currently resides in Chattogram city.

Police officials confirmed finding two bullet marks near the second-floor balcony, along with nine empty shell casings and one live round at the scene.

Despite multiple attempts to reach Jahangir Alam for further comment, he could not be contacted via phone.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kazi Md Tarek Aziz of Hathazari Circle said police inspected the location soon after the incident. “Based on the businessman’s statement, he had received a WhatsApp call demanding Tk 50 lakh. However, he did not report it earlier. We suspect that the attack is linked to this demand,” he said.

He added that efforts are underway to identify and arrest the perpetrators. Police have advised the businessman to file a formal complaint.
