RAJSHAHI – The bodies of four members of the same family were recovered on Friday afternoon from Bamnashikôr village in Parila Union, Paba Upazila, Rajshahi. The deceased have been identified as Minarul Islam (35), his wife Monira Khatun (31), their son Mahim (14), and daughter Mithila (3). The incident has cast a shadow of grief over the local community.
Motihar police retrieved the bodies from the scene. Prior to this, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) collected evidence from the site. Preliminary reports indicate that Minarul allegedly killed his wife and children by strangulation before committing suicide himself on Thursday night.
According to eyewitness accounts, Monira and Mithila’s bodies were found on a bed in one room, while Mahim’s body was in the adjacent room. Minarul was found hanging from a fan in the same room. Two handwritten suicide notes, believed to be authored by Minarul, were recovered from the house. Family members have confirmed that the handwriting matches his.
One note stated: “I, Minarul, am writing everything myself. Tonight, all four of us will die. No one else is to blame. I first killed my wife, then Mahim, then Mithila, and finally, I hanged myself.”
The second note read: “I killed everyone with my own hands. If I die alone, my wife, son, and daughter would be left in hardship. We are dying due to debts and lack of food. We can no longer endure this pain, so it is better to die than to survive.”
Minarul’s aunt, Janehar Begum, explained that on the night of the incident, Monira and Mithila slept in one room, and Mahim, a class eight student, slept in the adjacent room. Minarul returned home around 11 PM. At that time, his elder brother Ruhul, along with his wife Dilruba and daughter Himu, were in another room, while Minarul’s parents, Rustam Ali and Anjura Begum, were sleeping in the courtyard. The tragic event went unnoticed until around 8 AM the next morning when Anjura called out to Minarul. Finding no response, Rustam climbed onto the tin roof and saw Minarul’s hanging body. Upon entering the rooms, the other three bodies were also discovered, prompting police notification.
Janehar Begum added that Minarul had multiple loan installments pending and often avoided being at home to escape debt collectors. He occasionally worked as a farmer, truck helper, or fisherman but was known to have a quick temper and sometimes refused work when upset.
Local Union Parishad Chairman Saeed Ali Murshed said Minarul visited him two days ago requesting money to buy rice, and the chairman provided 2,000 Taka. He added that Minarul had been in debt for several years, having previously sold five kathas of land to repay a 500,000 Taka loan, but later incurred new debts. Locals also reported that Minarul gambled, which contributed to his financial troubles.
Upon receiving news of the deaths, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abu Sufian visited the scene. He told reporters: “It appears that the wife and daughter were strangled, and the son may have been killed the same way. Preliminary investigations suggest that Minarul committed suicide. The exact reasons will be confirmed after further investigation.”
The commissioner also confirmed that the bodies have been sent to Rajshahi Medical College morgue for autopsy. He added that investigations into Minarul’s gambling habits and financial difficulties are ongoing. Family members have confirmed the authenticity of the suicide notes, which mention financial problems as a factor in the tragedy.
