In Narail’s Lohagara Upazila, Lohagara Police Station has arrested four individuals, including a woman, in connection with the abduction of an expatriate’s child. The abducted child, Abdullah Mezbah (8), was safely rescued by the police. On Sunday (August 31) afternoon, Md. Shariful Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Lohagara Police Station, confirmed the details during a press conference.
The rescued child, Abdullah Mezbah, is the son of Salauddin Mridha, an expatriate from Ghagha village in Kotakhol Union, Lohagara Upazila.
The arrested individuals are Ujjal Sheikh (36), son of Shahid Sheikh from Ghagha Uttarpara village; Rozina Begum (35), wife of Babul Laskar; Jannatul (20), a van driver and son of Hanif from Yogia village; and Sakib (17), son of Babul Laskar.
According to police sources, Ujjal Sheikh from Ghagha village, Kotakhol Union, planned the abduction of Abdullah Mezbah from the same village. He lured the van driver Jannatul with a promise of 10,000 taka, paying 500 taka upfront and assuring the rest upon completion of the task. Additionally, Ujjal enticed Rozina Begum and her son Sakib by promising to settle their loan debts with the ransom money, to which they agreed.
On Saturday (August 30) around 8:30 PM, Abdullah went to a local shop owned by Ujjal Sheikh near his home. As per the plan, Ujjal administered two ‘Histacin’ tablets to render the child unconscious. With the assistance of Jannatul, Rozina Begum, and Sakib, the child was abducted with the intent to demand ransom. Later that night, the child was hidden in a room at the Niribili Picnic Spot in Lohagara, with Rozina Begum tasked with guarding him.
To mislead the investigation, Ujjal Sheikh advised Abdullah’s relatives to file an abduction complaint at Lohagara Police Station. However, inconsistencies in their statements raised suspicions, prompting the police to launch an investigation. Following swift action by OC Md. Shariful Islam, Inspector (Investigation) Ajit Kumar Roy, Sub-Inspectors (SI) Tarok Biswas, Azizur Talukdar, and accompanying forces, the child was rescued unharmed from the Niribili Picnic Spot in the early hours of Sunday (August 31), and the four suspects, including the woman, were arrested.
OC Md. Shariful Islam informed the media that the police successfully rescued the child unharmed during the operation. The four arrested individuals confessed to the abduction during initial questioning. Legal proceedings against them are underway.
