Ex-Husband Arrested for Brutal Murder of Sumi Akter in Kafrul

Police have arrested Md. Shafikul Islam Kazi (26) in connection with the brutal murder of his ex-wife, Sumi Akter (21), in Dhaka’s Kafrul area. The arrest was made around 2:30 AM on Saturday (August 9) in the Kalagachia area of Narayanganj’s Bandar Thana. Dhaka Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest in a press release on Sunday.

According to police, Sumi Akter and Shafikul Islam were married on April 19, 2018, and have a five-year-old son. Due to domestic disputes, the couple divorced on June 30. After the divorce, they lived in adjacent residences. As their son stayed with Shafikul, Sumi would occasionally visit to bring food and feed him.

Police sources revealed that on the evening of July 21, Sumi went to Shafikul’s residence with food for their son. Around 3:00 AM, Shafikul was seen attempting to leave with the child, which caught the attention of neighbors, prompting him to flee. The next morning, around 9:00 AM, Sumi’s body was found wrapped in a plastic bag under a bed after the door was broken open. Her scarf was found tightly wrapped around her neck.

Following the incident, Sumi’s family filed a murder case at Kafrul Police Station. After his arrest, Shafikul provided a confessional statement in court.
