Relatives of the newborn allege that the theft was a result of negligence and mismanagement by the hospital authorities, claiming there is no proper monitoring of who enters or leaves the premises. However, the hospital authorities maintain that the incident took place in the presence of the family members and deny any negligence on their part.
According to the hospital authorities and the family, Mithila, the wife of Sharif Miah, a CNG driver from Shibpur upazila’s Baraialgi area, gave birth to a baby boy via cesarean section on Saturday (August 9) afternoon. On Sunday noon, while the mother was unconscious in the hospital cabin and family members were outside, the newborn went missing. The disappearance sparked chaos at the hospital, prompting police intervention to bring the situation under control.
CCTV footage reviewed by the authorities shows an unidentified woman in a burqa leaving the hospital with something concealed under her shawl. It is suspected that she stole the newborn.
The baby’s father, Sharif Miah, recounted, “At noon, my wife, my mother-in-law, and I were in the cabin. An unknown woman entered and started talking to us. My elder child was crying, so I stepped outside with them. Later, I was informed that my newborn was missing. My mother-in-law told me that while she was in the washroom, the woman took the baby and fled. My wife was unconscious and asleep at the time.”
He further questioned, “How can someone take a one-day-old baby out of the hospital without the authorities noticing? This proves the hospital staff’s involvement in the theft. If they weren’t involved, why didn’t they question where the baby was being taken? How did the woman know my wife’s name and details?”
The hospital’s founder, Mujibur Rahman, stated, “A woman entered the cabin claiming to be a relative, using Mithila’s name. Family members were present at the time. Shortly after, the family reported the baby missing. The CCTV footage provides some clues about the incident.”
Narsingdi Sadar Model Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Emdadul Haque said, “We have collected the hospital’s CCTV footage regarding the newborn theft. The police are working to recover the baby and arrest those involved as quickly as possible.”
