To address the severe traffic congestion in the capital, a pilot program for a Traffic Signal Automation System was launched on Saturday (August 30). Initially, the system has been implemented at seven intersections across Dhaka’s two city corporations. Developed using local technology, the automation system has cost approximately 180 million BDT.
The interim government has taken this initiative to alleviate the inconvenience caused by traffic jams and save valuable working hours lost in congestion. In the first phase, the system has been introduced at seven intersections from the High Court to Abdullahpur. Plans are in place to gradually expand the system to 22 intersections across Dhaka.
The project is being implemented in collaboration with Dhaka North and South City Corporations, Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), and the Traffic Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Neelima Akhter, Executive Director of DTCA, stated that the primary goal of this pilot program is to raise public awareness. The trial, which will run for two to three weeks, aims to assess the system's effectiveness, identify any issues, and ensure readiness before its full-scale implementation.
