Couple Arrested in Anti-Discrimination Student Movement Case in Manikganj

Police have arrested a couple, Shafiqul Islam Sohag (48) and Shirin Akhter Mukta (37), in connection with a case filed during the anti-discrimination student movement. They were detained on Thursday night (July 31) at around 10 PM from the Tinpotti area of Manikganj town.

The case was filed over an alleged attack on students and the public during the movement in July of last year.

Shafiqul Islam Sohag is a resident of Paschim Dashora village under Manikganj municipality and the son of Jalal Uddin. He is a former publicity secretary of the district unit of Chhatra League and also served as the convener of the municipal Chhatra League. He was known as an active member of the district Jubo League.

Sources said that Sohag and his wife Shirin were political followers of Sultanul Azam Khan Apel, joint general secretary of the Manikganj District Awami League.

Manikganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) SM Amanullah confirmed the arrests, stating, "Both individuals are named accused in the case. They will be sent to court in connection with the case filed over the anti-discrimination student movement."

The arrests have sparked discussions in the local political landscape, with law enforcement continuing operations to apprehend other accused individuals.
