Attack on Journalist Khorshed Alam: Attempted Murder for Reporting on Drug Smuggling in Sherpur

In a shocking incident in Jhinaigati Upazila of Sherpur, senior journalist Khorshed Alam, the Sherpur correspondent for Dainik Bhorer Kagoj and Jhinaigati correspondent for Dainik Ittefaq, was brutally attacked and nearly killed by criminals in retaliation for his continuous reporting on drug and smuggling syndicates. He is currently receiving treatment in critical condition at Sherpur District Hospital.

The attack took place on Friday (August 15) around 11 PM at Sandhyakura Bazar in Nalkura Union of the upazila. Journalist leaders have strongly condemned the incident and demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the attackers.

According to the injured journalist and his family, Khorshed Alam was returning home after completing his duties when members of a drug and smuggling syndicate, who had been lying in wait, attacked him with local weapons. He was severely beaten, and a blow to his head caused bleeding from his ears, nose, and eyes. Believing him to be dead, the attackers fled, leaving him on the spot. Upon receiving the news, Jhinaigati Thana police, with the help of locals, rescued him and admitted him to the Upazila Health Complex. As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Sherpur District Hospital on Saturday morning.

Speaking from his hospital bed on Saturday afternoon, Khorshed Alam said, “The drug smuggling syndicate led by Rasel is so reckless that people are too scared to speak out against them. A few days ago, I published multiple reports exposing their activities. Since then, Rasel, his accomplice Mamun, and others have been threatening to kill me. Last night, they attacked me with the intent to murder.”

Sherpur Press Club’s Acting President Rafiq Mazid and General Secretary Masud Hasan Badal have strongly condemned the attack and demanded that the culprits be brought to justice immediately.

Jhinaigati Thana’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Al-Amin said, “Upon receiving the news, I personally went to the scene and ensured that the injured journalist was admitted to the hospital. Operations are already underway to arrest those involved in the attack.”
