An assistant teacher at Yaripur High School in Ashulia, Savar, has lodged a written complaint with the Savar Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Abu Bakar Siddique, accusing the school’s headmaster and several others of sexual harassment, physical assault, and coercion. The complainant, Nusrat Jahan, alleges that Headmaster Mahidur Rahman, along with teacher Shahnaz Bebi and others, subjected her to persistent harassment and orchestrated an attack by students.
According to the complaint, Headmaster Mahidur Rahman allegedly harassed Nusrat Jahan for months, demanding Tk 7-8 lakh to secure her job at the school. When she refused to comply, he reportedly pressured her to engage in an inappropriate relationship. Upon her refusal, the headmaster allegedly incited students and other staff against her, leading to her being deprived of various school facilities and having her salary withheld.
The situation escalated on Wednesday when Nusrat Jahan was called to the teachers’ room by Shahnaz Bebi. There, a group of unruly students, allegedly instigated by the accused teachers, verbally abused and physically assaulted her. The complaint states that the attackers attempted to break her neck and right hand and forcibly obtained her fingerprints and signatures on blank papers.
Nusrat Jahan further alleges that despite her qualifications, she was denied school privileges due to her refusal to comply with the headmaster’s demands. She claims the harassment extended to verbal abuse and humiliation by students and other teachers, culminating in the recent assault. In her complaint, she named Headmaster Mahidur Rahman, teacher Shahnaz Bebi, computer operator Bayezid, and teachers Renuka Sultana, Sadia Arefin, and Nurul Huda as perpetrators, demanding their punishment.
Headmaster Mahidur Rahman denied the allegations, claiming that Nusrat Jahan has mental health issues and is making baseless accusations. He invited further inquiry, stating, “Come to the school and talk to everyone to uncover the truth.”
When contacted, UNO Abu Bakar Siddique confirmed receiving the complaint and stated that an investigation would be conducted through the education office, with necessary actions to follow based on the findings.
The incident has raised serious concerns about workplace safety and accountability in educational institutions, prompting calls for a thorough and impartial investigation.
