Three Arrested in Pallabi for Attack and Shooting Over Tk 5 Crore Extortion Demand

Dhaka: In a violent incident in the capital’s Pallabi area, a group of armed individuals attacked AK Builders, a residential construction company, allegedly over a Tk 5 crore extortion demand. The attack took place on Friday, July 11, 2025, around 5:00 PM in the Alabdartek area. Police have arrested three suspects in connection with the incident.

The arrested individuals are identified as Niloy Hossain Bappi (29), Mamun Molla (33), and Mohammad Rayhan (28). According to Shafiul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Pallabi Police Station, a case has been filed, and the suspects have been sent to court with a seven-day remand request for interrogation. Officials from AK Builders reported that a group of 30 to 40 armed assailants stormed their office, firing four shots during the attack. One employee, SharifUL Islam, was injured by gunfire and is receiving treatment at Kurmitola General Hospital. Mohammad Kaiyum Ali Khan, Chairman of AK Builders, revealed that three weeks prior to the incident, an individual named Jamil demanded Tk 5 crore from him. When the demand was not met, the company faced two prior attacks on June 27 and July 4, during which CCTV cameras and other items were stolen or damaged. Kaiyum’s son, Amimul Ehsan, told *Prothom Alo* that the Friday attack involved a large group of assailants who not only vandalized the office but also opened fire, leading to the injury. A General Diary (GD) was filed by Kaiyum Ali Khan at Pallabi Police Station on Thursday, July 10, documenting the earlier attacks and threats. The GD mentioned that unidentified individuals had been issuing death threats and creating fear in the area. Police are analyzing CCTV footage to identify additional suspects, with efforts ongoing to apprehend others involved. The incident has sparked fear among local residents and business owners, especially following a similar extortion-related killing of a scrap dealer in Old Dhaka’s Mitford area, which has fueled nationwide outrage.
