Sheikh Hasina and Awami League Should Face Trial: Mirza Fakhrul

শেখ হাসিনার সঙ্গে আওয়ামী লীগেরও বিচার করা উচিত : মির্জা ফখরুল

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has stated that Sheikh Hasina is solely responsible for mass killings, and her trial has already begun. He further emphasized that the Awami League, as a party, should also face trial for its involvement in fascist attacks.

On Wednesday (July 9), Mirza Fakhrul made these remarks in response to journalists’ questions while visiting BNP Chairperson’s advisors, Professor Abdul Kuddus and Professor Siraj Uddin Ahmed, who are undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in the capital. Responding to a question, Mirza Fakhrul said, “You all know very well that our party, BNP, has been the biggest victim of the torture, killings, abductions, and murders under the fascist Awami League government. I myself was an accused in 112 cases and had the opportunity to go to jail 13 times.” He added, “We have always believed that every political party that supports fascism and works in favor of it—especially those who have worked for the Awami League—should face punishment. They must be brought under the law and punished.” Fakhrul further stated, “I believe Sheikh Hasina, as the leader of the Awami League, is solely responsible for the genocide—the killing of thousands of people. Her trial has already started. We are hopeful that she and everyone involved in this genocide and fascist aggression will face justice. As such, the Awami League as a party should also face trial.” Regarding elections, Fakhrul said in response to another question, “The sooner the country can be brought back to the path of elections, the better it will be for the nation. Let me be clear: if there is any force for democracy, it is the BNP. If anyone has fought the most for democracy, it is also the BNP. It was the BNP that brought multi-party democracy to Bangladesh from a one-party system and later established parliamentary democracy.” He continued, “There is no need to question this. We all have to work together to save the country. It is the responsibility of every political party to bring the country back to the right track, and the sooner we can do that, the better. Those who think elections are not necessary should reconsider. Elections are needed for the people. We need an elected government that maintains a connection with the people. That’s why we are saying we are participating in the reform process. We have raised the demand for every reform. Therefore, there is no conflict between reforms and elections—they will go hand in hand.”
