The newly appointed Secretary General of Jatiya Party, Shameem Haider Patwary, claimed that the party has split seven times due to the betrayal of some senior leaders. Speaking at a reception organized by the Dhaka North Metropolitan Committee at the Jatiya Party Chairman’s Banani office on Wednesday afternoon, he stated that while senior leaders and presidium members betrayed the party in the past, grassroots leaders and workers remained loyal to the party’s mainstream. Referring to a meeting on June 25 with district and metropolitan committee presidents and secretaries, Shameem noted that allegations of breaching party discipline were raised against three co-chairmen—Anisul Islam Mahmud, ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader—and former Secretary General Md. Mujibul Haque Chunnu. The leaders demanded punitive action against them, as per a party statement. Shameem emphasized that on June 25, party leaders and workers gathered in Dhaka to express unwavering support for Chairman GM Quader, determining the party’s future direction. He praised GM Quader’s integrity, noting that despite serving as a minister in two key ministries for five years, no corruption allegations were made against him. He also highlighted Quader’s resistance to the authoritarian practices of the previous Awami League government, which failed to implicate him in any corruption cases. Shameem recounted that former President and Jatiya Party founder Hussain Muhammad Ershad, despite his nine-year tenure as president, never allowed GM Quader to rely on his influence. Quader rose through his own merit, holding significant positions without ever being tainted by corruption. On Monday, GM Quader, using his constitutional authority, sacked Anisul Islam Mahmud, Ruhul Amin Howlader, and Md. Mujibul Haque from all party posts, including primary membership. In response, these leaders, along with 16 former presidium members, held a press conference on Tuesday, alleging that Quader avoided holding a council out of fear of defeat. Shameem countered this, asserting that grassroots leaders and workers, who form the council, stand unitedly behind Quader, and no credible candidate could challenge him. The reception was attended by key party figures, including Presidium members Mir Abdus Sabur Asud, Rezaul Islam Bhuiyan, Alamgir Sikder Loton, Sherifa Quader, Monirul Islam Milon, Md. Mamtaj Uddin, and Moinur Rabbi Chowdhury, among others. The event was chaired by Dhaka North Metropolitan Convener Md. Samsul Haque and conducted by Member Secretary Sultan Ahmed Selim.
