Resignation of Bangladesh College Chhatra Dal Leader and Nine Other Leaders Amid Outrage Over Brutal Murder

A wave of resignations has hit the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s student wing, Chhatra Dal, following public outrage over the brutal murder of a businessman named Chand Sohag in Old Dhaka near Sir Salimullah Medical College (Mitford). Allegations have surfaced against Youth Dal activists, who are accused of mercilessly beating Sohag, crushing his body with concrete pieces, and even jumping on his corpse after confirming his death.

The murder took place on July 9, but a video and images of the horrific incident went viral on social media on Friday, July 11, sparking nationwide condemnation. The gruesome visuals led to widespread criticism from the general public, civil society, and various political groups.

In response to the incident, protests and rallies erupted across universities nationwide starting Friday, with students demanding justice for the perpetrators. The incident also triggered strong reactions within Chhatra Dal, with frustration and disappointment leading to the resignation of nine leaders and activists from various educational institutions, including Dhaka University, Jagannath University, and other committees.

Mohammad Abu Sayeed, a member of the Masterda Surya Sen Hall branch of Chhatra Dal at Dhaka University, announced his resignation on Saturday, July 12, via a Facebook post. He cited the party’s dynastic structure, lack of regular councils for leadership elections, and absence of internal democracy as reasons for his decision.

Similarly, Mohammad Lisanul Alam Lisan, general secretary of the Chhatra Dal branch at Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology, resigned late Friday night (July 11) at 12:16 AM, announcing his decision on Facebook. In his post, Lisan reflected on his decade-long involvement with the party, stating, “From my early days, I was involved in politics through family ties for over ten years. The day a true, transparent Bangladesh is built, I will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with you at the forefront of the march, ready to face the first bullet. Let peace return to this land. Nothing is more valuable to me than the soil of Bangladesh. Long live Bangladesh.”

Parvez Rana Pranta, a convener committee member of Jagannath University’s Chhatra Dal, also resigned, citing the unethical actions of some BNP and affiliate leaders. In his post, he wrote, “Due to personal reasons, I am stepping down from my position as a convener committee member of Jagannath University Chhatra Dal. Since my first year at the university, I have been associated with Chhatra Dal and received immense love from many. I am grateful to them. However, recent unethical actions by some leaders of Chhatra Dal and BNP affiliates have caused me mental distress. While some organizational steps have been taken, they seem inadequate to me. I hope Chhatra Dal and BNP affiliates will overcome this chaos and become truly student- and people-friendly.”

Rakibul Hasan Rana, another convener committee member of Jagannath University’s Chhatra Dal and a student of the 2020-21 academic year in the Law Department, announced his resignation on Saturday, July 12, via a Facebook post. He expressed disappointment, stating, “Assalamu Alaikum. For personal reasons, I am stepping down from my position as a convener committee member of Jagannath University Chhatra Dal. After the July Revolution, I had hoped for a change in Bangladesh’s student politics, but that change is yet to be seen. I am deeply disappointed and mentally distressed by the current situation.”

Russel Mia, a member of the convener committee and former senior vice-president of Principal Abul Kashem Hall at Government Bangla College, also resigned on Saturday, July 12, via a Facebook post. He wrote, “I want to enjoy the fruits of my labor in my own way. I no longer wish to bear the insults to my parents or commit sins because of some opportunistic leaders. Therefore, I am completely withdrawing myself from Bangladesh Nationalist Chhatra Dal.”

Other resignations include Muhammad Rabbi Mia from the Moulvibazar district Chhatra Dal branch, Md. Zahimur Rahman Jisan (senior vice-president) and Md. Ishtiaq Rahman (organizational secretary) from Gopalganj Medical College Chhatra Dal, and Ariful Islam Imrul, vice-president of the full committee of Chunarughat Chhatra Dal’s Ranigaon Branch No. 9 in Sylhet.
