In a gruesome incident in Chittagong’s Roufabad area, Md. Sumon Ali allegedly stabbed his wife, Fatema Begum, to death, dismembered her body into 11 pieces, and scattered them across their apartment. He then fled by breaking the grill of their 10th-floor flat in Paharika Housing Society, Bayezid Bostami. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Sumon on Friday night from Fulbaria, Bijoynagar, Brahmanbaria, and presented him at a press conference on Saturday noon at RAB-7’s media center in Chandgaon, Chittagong. The incident occurred on the night of July 9, 2025, when unusual noises, including sounds of water and commotion, were heard from the couple’s flat. Security guard Mashiur Rahman, alerted by the sounds, visited the apartment. After a 30-minute delay, Sumon opened the door but gave vague and evasive responses when questioned. Suspecting foul play, Mashiur entered the flat and discovered bloodstains, blood-soaked clothes in the bathroom, and body parts in the commode. As he went downstairs to alert residents and secure the flat, Sumon broke the window grill and escaped. A joint operation by RAB-7 Chittagong, RAB-9 Sylhet, and RAB Headquarters’ intelligence wing led to Sumon’s arrest. During interrogation, Sumon, a resident of Suyagazi village in Cumilla’s Sadar South and son of Sundar Ali, revealed that he married Fatema Begum 10 years ago. After working in Saudi Arabia, he returned to Bangladesh in June 2024 and began driving a pickup van. Frequent disputes with his wife culminated in a heated argument on July 9, during which he used two knives to kill her. RAB-7 Commander Lieutenant Colonel Md. Hafizur Rahman provided details of the case during the press conference. Fatema Begum’s elder brother, Mohammad Anwar Hossain, filed a murder case (Case No. 20, dated July 10, 2025) against Sumon at Bayezid Bostami Police Station. Legal proceedings are ongoing, and Sumon remains in custody for further investigation.
