New Case Filed in Gopalganj, 3,008 Accused in Four Cases, 306 Arrested

Police in Gopalganj have filed another case in connection with the attack and clashes surrounding the National Citizen Party’s (NCP) July rally. The case, filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act, pertains to the burning of a police vehicle and obstructing roads by felling trees in Satpar of Sadar Upazila.

On Friday (July 18) night, Sub-Inspector (SI) Shamim Al Mamun of Sadar Police Station filed the case, naming 54 individuals and including 350 unidentified persons as accused. Police have arrested 44 individuals in connection with this case and sent them to jail through the court. Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mir Mohammad Sajedur Rahman of Sadar Police Station confirmed the matter to Prothom Alo.

With this, a total of four cases have been filed in Gopalganj over allegations of attacking police, vandalizing and setting fire to vehicles, and engaging in anti-state activities. These cases were lodged over the past two days at Sadar, Kashiani, and Kotalipara police stations. The four cases name 354 individuals from the banned Awami League and its affiliate organizations, along with 2,654 unidentified persons as accused.

From Wednesday (July 16) to Saturday (July 19) noon, law enforcement agencies conducted raids across various parts of the district, arresting 306 individuals who were sent to jail through the court. Of these, 119 were arrested in the last 24 hours.

According to police sources from the district’s five police stations, 92 individuals (including 44 new arrests) were detained in Sadar, 77 (including 33 new arrests) in Kashiani, 88 (including 22 new arrests) in Muksudpur, 27 (including 10 new arrests) in Tungipara, and 22 (including 10 new arrests) in Kotalipara.

On Wednesday, leaders, activists, and supporters of the Awami League and its affiliate organizations attacked the NCP’s program. Subsequent clashes with law enforcement have resulted in five deaths and over fifty injuries so far. To control the situation, District Administrator and Magistrate Muhammad Kamruzzaman initially imposed Section 144 on Wednesday. A curfew was enforced that night, and although its duration was extended several times, it was relaxed from Saturday morning until 8 PM.
