Police arrested Prasanta Kumar Roy, the vice-president of Netrokona District Awami League, on Sunday night around 11:30 PM from a residence in the Dattapara area of Tongi, Gazipur. Roy, a resident of Netrokona town’s Borobazar area, is a former chairman of the Netrokona District Council and a former mayor of the municipality.
According to party and police sources, following the fall of the Awami League government, at least 60 cases have been filed since August 17 across 10 police stations in Netrokona against leaders and activists of Awami League and its affiliated organizations, with over 6,000 individuals named as accused. Prasanta Kumar Roy has been implicated in at least eight of these cases, filed at the Netrokona Model Police Station and Barhatta Police Station. After going into hiding, Roy led a sudden procession under the Awami League banner on the morning of June 20. The procession began in the Borobazar area of Netrokona town and ended in front of the Awami League’s district office in the Chhoto Bazar area, where Roy delivered a speech criticizing the current interim government. Videos of these activities went viral on Facebook.
