Valuka, Mymensingh, July 14, 2025 – A garment worker, Rafiqul Islam, returned home from a night shift on Monday morning to find his house locked. Breaking the lock, he discovered the bloodied bodies of his wife, Moyna Begum (25), daughter, Raisa Akter (7), and son, Md. Nirab (2), in their home on T&T Road in Valuka Pourashava, Mymensingh. The gruesome murder of the mother and her two children has shocked the local community, drawing crowds of onlookers.
The prime suspect, Rafiqul’s younger brother Nazrul Islam, who lived in an adjacent room, has been absconding since the incident. Police recovered a machete from Nazrul’s room, suspecting his involvement in the triple murder.
Speaking at the Valuka police station on Monday afternoon, a devastated Rafiqul said, “I spoke to my wife last night around 10 PM using my brother’s phone. When I returned home this morning, the door was locked. Breaking it open, I found the bodies of my wife and children.” He added, “I took a 40,000-taka loan to secure bail for my brother, who was in jail for a murder case. He earned 5,000-6,000 taka monthly driving a rickshaw. I supported him to help him stand on his own, as managing the family alone was tough. But why did he destroy my family? I wanted to protect my own brother, and he shattered my carefully built life.”
Chomna Khatun (40), a tenant in the same house who works as a cook locally, told , “I was home last night, but the rain drowned out any sounds. We are stunned by such a brutal murder. I’ve never seen anything this horrific in my life.”
Nazma Akter, Moyna’s elder sister, wailed at the scene, “They killed my sister, my niece, and nephew. Our father died when we were young, and we grew up in hardship. We suspect her brother-in-law did this. We demand his execution.”
Police revealed that Nazrul Islam had served over two years in prison for a murder case in Joydebpur, Gazipur, and was released on bail two and a half months ago, facilitated by Rafiqul’s 40,000-taka loan. Nazrul lived in the same rented house and drove an auto-rickshaw. A machete, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered from under the bed in his room. Police also retrieved Nazrul’s mobile phone, which he sold to a local around 8 AM before fleeing.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Gafargaon Circle) Montosh Biswas said, “The housewife and her two children were killed by having their throats slit. We recovered the machete used in the crime. We suspect the murders stemmed from a family dispute. The involvement of the victim’s brother-in-law is under investigation, and police are working to apprehend him. Necessary legal steps are being taken.”
