Four Arrested for Gang Rape of Schoolgirl in Khagrachhari

In Khagrachhari Sadar Upazila’s Bhaibonchhara area, police have arrested four individuals accused of gang-raping an eighth-grade schoolgirl.

The arrests were made in the early hours of Thursday (July 17) following a police operation in Bhaibonchhara after a complaint was filed at the local police station.

The arrested individuals are Arman Hossain (30), Sakib Alam (20), Saddam Hossain (32), and Enayet Hossain (25), all residents of Bhaibonchhara. According to the case statement, on June 27, the victim visited the Jagannath Temple near Bhaibonchhara Bazar to participate in the Rath Yatra festival. After the event, she stayed at the rented house of a distant uncle. That night, the accused entered the house, held the occupants hostage, and threatened them. They then took the victim to another room, where they allegedly raped her one after another under threats of death before fleeing the scene. The eighth-grade student was left traumatized by the incident. On July 12, overwhelmed by the ordeal, she attempted suicide by consuming poison. She was admitted to Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital for treatment and returned home after initial recovery. However, due to complications from the poisoning, she experienced chest pain and was readmitted to the hospital. While under treatment, the girl disclosed the incident on Wednesday. Subsequently, her father filed a case at Khagrachhari Sadar Police Station. Khagrachhari Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Baten Mridha confirmed that a rape case was registered, and four suspects were arrested following a police operation. Legal proceedings are underway.
