Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested five members of an organized robbery gang in the Motijheel area of the capital while they were preparing to commit a robbery by impersonating law enforcement officials. The arrests were made during a raid conducted on Tuesday night based on confidential information.
The arrested individuals are Abdul Mannan (35), Riyad Hossain (37), Abdul Jalil (40), Matin Khan (37), and Paresh Adhikari (35). During the operation, police recovered a black jacket with "RAB" written on it, a black walkie-talkie, and a pair of handcuffs used for the robbery.
On Thursday, a press release from the DMP stated that on Tuesday night, based on secret information, it was learned that a group of miscreants was preparing for a robbery in the Balaka Chattar area of Motijheel. Acting on this information, a team from the DMP’s Detective Branch (DB) Wari Division conducted a raid in the area. Sensing the presence of police, the suspects attempted to flee, but five were apprehended. However, four to five other gang members managed to escape. A case has been filed at the Motijheel Police Station against both the arrested and the absconding suspects.
The press release further stated that during preliminary interrogation, the arrested individuals confessed to being active members of an organized robbery gang. They targeted customers who withdrew large sums of money from banks, robbing them by posing as law enforcement officials. It was also revealed that the arrested individuals have multiple cases filed against them in various police stations.
