Mother and Daughter Drown in Floodwater
On Friday morning, police recovered the bodies of Bilkis Akhtar (28) and her two-year-old daughter Bithi from a flooded area in Nawanagar village, Bangshikunda South Union, Madhyanagar Upazila. Their home was in Ghilachouka village, Kalmakanda Upazila, Netrokona. According to local sources, Bilkis earned a living by begging in Alampur and nearby villages in Madhyanagar. On Thursday evening, after finishing her rounds, she set out for home. It is believed that while crossing a flooded road near Nawanagar village, both mother and daughter drowned. On Friday morning, a passerby spotted their bodies floating in the water and informed locals, who recovered the bodies and notified the police.
Madhyanagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Monibur Rahman said, “Upon receiving information from passersby, we reached the spot and recovered the bodies of the mother and daughter. As their relatives had no complaints regarding the drowning, the bodies were handed over to them.”
Elderly Woman Dies in Boat Capsize
In a separate incident in Madhyanagar, a boat carrying 25-30 passengers capsized, resulting in the death of Shamsunnahar (70), a resident of Durlabhpur village, Barakhapan Union, Kalmakanda Upazila, Netrokona, and wife of the late Aziz Mia.
OC Monibur Rahman stated that on Friday morning, a covered boat carrying 25-30 passengers left Swarasatipur for Madhyanagar. As the boat reached under the Piprakanda Bridge, it suddenly capsized due to strong currents. While most passengers managed to swim to shore, Shamsunnahar could not be found initially. Locals searched and recovered her from inside the boat’s canopy, but a local doctor declared her dead upon examination. After completing legal formalities, her body was handed over to her family.
