Death Penalty for Rape of Disabled Girl in Faridpur, Court Orders Sale of Accused’s Property to Pay Fine

A court in Faridpur has sentenced a man to death for raping a 13-year-old girl with physical and mental disabilities. The verdict was delivered on Monday (July 21) around 12:30 PM by Justice Shamima Parvin, the District and Sessions Judge of the Faridpur Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal.

In addition to the death penalty, the court imposed a fine of Tk 5 lakh on the convict, Nuruddin Molla (57), and ordered the District Collector to sell his land and property to provide the fine amount to the victim.

Nuruddin Molla, a resident of Kosha Gopalpur village in Kanaipur Union, Faridpur Sadar, was present in court during the pronouncement of the verdict. Following the ruling, he was taken to Faridpur District Jail under police custody.

According to court sources, on the afternoon of September 23, 2023, the victim’s parents and brother had gone to Faridpur Medical College Hospital to visit a relative under treatment. Taking advantage of their absence, Nuruddin Molla entered the house and raped the girl. When the girl screamed, neighbors rushed to the scene, prompting Nuruddin to flee.

The following day, September 24, the victim’s father filed a case against Nuruddin under the Women and Child Repression Prevention Act at Faridpur Kotwali Police Station. The case was investigated by Sub-Inspector (SI) Shamim Ahmed of Kotwali Police Station, who submitted a charge sheet against Nuruddin on July 31, 2024.

Confirming the verdict, Public Prosecutor Golam Rabbani told Prothom Alo, “This is a historic judgment. It will serve as a landmark across the country and play a significant role in reducing the social menace of rape. The court’s directive to sell the accused’s property to pay the fine to the victim is an unprecedented addition to such verdicts.”
