Death Toll Rises in Uttara Plane Crash: Four More Students Succumb to Injuries

In a tragic plane crash at Milestone School and College in Uttara, Dhaka, four more students under treatment at the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute have passed away, raising the death toll to 27. The confirmation came from Dr. Shaon Bin Rahman, Resident Surgeon at the institute, around 3:15 AM on Monday night.

The deceased students have been identified as Ericsson (13), Aryan (13), Nazia (13), and Sayan Yusuf (14).

However, according to the latest update from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the death toll stands at 20. Additionally, the bodies of eight victims have been identified and handed over to their families, as reported by ISPR around 1:30 AM on Tuesday. Earlier, at around 8:00 PM, ISPR issued a statement indicating 20 deaths and 171 injuries, with the injured receiving treatment at various hospitals in the capital. The statement also detailed the number of casualties across different hospitals:

  • Kuwait Maitree Hospital: 8 injured, no deaths.

  • National Burn Institute: 70 injured, 2 deaths.

  • Dhaka Medical College Hospital: 3 injured, 1 death.

  • CMH-Dhaka: 17 injured, 12 deaths.

  • Kurmitola General Hospital: 1 injured, 2 deaths.

  • Lubna General Hospital and Cardiac Center, Uttara: 11 injured, 2 deaths.

  • Uttara Adhunik Hospital: 60 injured, 1 death.

  • Uttara Crescent Hospital: 1 injured, no deaths.

While ISPR’s 8:00 PM statement reported two deaths at the National Burn Institute, hospital authorities later confirmed seven additional deaths. At around 10:30 PM, Dr. Shaon Bin Rahman reported the deaths of Maherin Chowdhury (40) and Afnan (14). By 1:30 AM, he confirmed the death of Abdullah Samin (14), a sixth-grade student at Milestone School and College. This indicates that ISPR’s statement at 1:30 AM did not reflect the latest fatalities at the National Burn Institute.

At around 3:15 AM, Dr. Shaon told the media, “Four more students have passed away. Ericsson had 100% burns, Aryan 85%, Nazia 90%, and Sayan Yusuf 95%. Currently, 42 patients are under treatment in various wards and the ICU.”

The incident occurred when a Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft crashed into a building at Milestone School and College in Uttara after 1:00 PM on Monday. The crash caused a fire that engulfed both the aircraft and the school building, which housed numerous students, most of whom were either injured or killed.

Following the crash, the Fire Service immediately launched a rescue operation. Eight units from Uttara and surrounding areas brought the fire under control and began rescuing victims. The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Army later joined the efforts, and the Air Force used helicopters to transport the injured to hospitals.
