During the July Uprising of 2024, madrasa students played a pivotal role in building fierce resistance against oppression, with many sacrificing their lives. The streets of Jatrabari in the capital were stained with the blood of these brave students, marking a significant chapter in Bangladesh’s fight for justice.
To commemorate their heroic contributions, the government will observe ‘Madrasa Resistance Day’ on Monday, July 21, for the first time with state recognition. The event, organized by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, the Ministry of Education, and the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, will feature a series of programs at the road adjacent to Ibn Sina Hospital in Jatrabari, with extensive preparations underway.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Education, this ceremony marks the government’s first official acknowledgment of the courageous role played by madrasa students in the uprising. The event will be graced by the presence of the government’s Education Adviser, Dr. C.R. Abrar, as the chief guest, alongside other advisers, secretaries, and distinguished figures from the fields of arts, literature, and education.
The formal program for ‘Madrasa Resistance Day’ will commence at 3:00 PM and continue until 11:00 PM. The event will include heartfelt tributes from the families of martyrs, shared experiences of the injured, and narratives highlighting the anti-fascist student movements of 2013, 2021, and 2024. The program will also feature poetry recitations, performances of hamd, naat, and nasheed, alongside rebellious songs reflecting the spirit of the uprising.
Two documentaries, Chhatrishe July (July 36) and Sada Jubba, Lal Rokto (White Robe, Red Blood), will be screened, capturing the essence of the movement. Additionally, a symbolic presentation of resistance and renaissance, a drone show, and the resounding chants of July’s fiery slogans will reverberate through the streets of Jatrabari, keeping the spirit of the uprising alive.
The event underscores the government’s commitment to honoring the sacrifices of madrasa students and ensuring their contributions to Bangladesh’s democratic struggle are remembered.
