Youth Arrested for Murder of Housewife Munni Khanom in Narail

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has arrested a youth in connection with the brutal murder of Munni Khanom (18), a housewife from Kalia upazila in Narail.

On Thursday (September 4), PBI Jessore Superintendent of Police Reshma Sharmin confirmed the arrest.

The arrestee, Sohel Sardar (20), is the son of Samad Sardar from Dumuria village under Naragati Police Station in Kalia.

According to SP Reshma Sharmin, the suspect was identified through analysis of digital evidence and CCTV footage. On the night of Wednesday (September 3), Sohel was apprehended from a mess house near Teghoria Bus Stand in Dhaka’s Keraniganj, with the assistance of local police.

During preliminary interrogation, Sohel confessed that he had a romantic relationship with Munni. On Friday night (August 29), the two met behind the Nalamara Government Primary School, where Sohel proposed marriage. Munni rejected the proposal, leading to a heated argument. In a fit of rage, Sohel murdered her and dumped the body in a nearby water body.

He also stole a chain from Munni’s neck, later discarding it behind his house after assuming it was fake. Police later recovered the chain. Sohel has since been produced before a Narail court.

Background: Munni Khanom, daughter of Shimul Mina from South Nalamara village, had been married for about 14 months to Hridoy Fakir of Terokhada upazila in Khulna. On August 29, she came to visit her parents’ house. That night, she was scheduled to return to her in-laws' home but went missing after 9 PM. After an unsuccessful search by her family, a missing person report (GD) was filed.

On the morning of September 2, Munni’s body was found floating in a water body behind the school. Her family identified the body, and Naragati police sent it for autopsy at Narail District Hospital. Following this, Munni’s mother filed a murder case against unknown persons.
