In separate operations, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-15) arrested two members of the notorious Mahin Group, a terrorist outfit, in Cox’s Bazar, recovering locally made firearms and sharp weapons. The operations were conducted in the early hours of Tuesday (August 19) in the Dakshin Ghonapara area of Cox’s Bazar municipality.
The arrested individuals are Md. Abul Kashem, alias Kalu (20), son of Hossain Ahmad from the Islampur area of Cox’s Bazar municipality, and Md. Imran (19), son of Md. Idris from Ward No. 9 of the same municipality. Assistant Superintendent of Police A. M. Faruk, RAB-15’s Law and Media Officer, confirmed the arrests.
According to RAB, the operation began in the early hours of Tuesday at the residence of Mahin Farabi in Dakshin Ghonapara. Sensing RAB’s presence, several individuals attempted to flee, but Md. Abul Kashem, alias Kalu, was apprehended. Based on his information, RAB recovered a locally made single-barrel gun, a kirich (large knife), and a ramda (machete) from the back of the house. Following Kalu’s confession, RAB identified the location of another group member, Md. Imran, and conducted a raid in Badsha Ghonapara, where he was arrested with a locally made LG (firearm) and a smartphone.
RAB-15 stated that during preliminary interrogation, the two admitted to collecting illegal arms from border areas and engaging in extortion and other criminal activities in Cox’s Bazar. The recovered weapons and the arrested individuals have been handed over to the Cox’s Bazar Model Police Station for further legal action.
