Two Dead, Eight Injured in Electrocution at Kaunia Fertilizer Shop Inauguration

In a tragic incident at Sahbaj village’s Amtala area in Kaunia upazila, Rangpur, two people died and eight others were injured due to electrocution during the inauguration ceremony of a chemical fertilizer shop. The incident occurred when a bamboo pole holding a microphone came into contact with a high-voltage power line. Three of the injured were admitted to Kaunia Upazila Health Complex, while two were transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

The incident took place on Sunday (August 3) around 8:30 PM. According to family and police sources, the inauguration of a fertilizer shop owned by local businessman Nazrul Ali began with a prayer session. Nazrul Ali, a devoted follower of a spiritual leader, had invited devotees and local residents to the event. During the ceremony, a microphone was set up using a green bamboo pole. Sudden rain and strong winds caused the pole to fall onto a 33,000-volt power line, leading to an electrical surge through the microphone’s wiring. This caused the microphone’s battery to explode with a loud sound.

Shafiqul Islam Huzur (38) from Mithapukur upazila and Shahabuddin Mia (45) from Itakumari union of Pirgacha upazila died on the spot. Among the eight injured, Hasu Mia from Sahbaj village and shop owner Nazrul Ali were admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, while the others were treated at Kaunia Upazila Health Complex.

Kaunia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Latif confirmed the deaths due to electrocution.
