The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Saidul Islam (37), the prime suspect in the rape case of a five-year-old girl in Sundarganj, Gaibandha.
Saidul Islam, son of the late Tofazzal Hossain, hails from the Uttar Sreepur (Chhatinamari) area of Sundarganj Upazila.
The arrest was announced in a press release signed by Additional Superintendent of Police Biplab Kumar Goswami of RAB-13 Gaibandha Camp on the night of Friday, August 1.
According to the press release, on July 8 at around 7 PM, Saidul Islam forcibly took the five-year-old girl to a secluded spot near a house in Uttar Sreepur, behind a room’s partition, covered her mouth, and raped her. On July 10, the victim’s mother filed a rape case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act at Sundarganj Police Station. Since then, Saidul had been in hiding.
Subsequently, RAB, alongside other law enforcement agencies, initiated a shadow investigation to apprehend the suspect. As part of this operation, a joint team from RAB-13 Gaibandha and RAB-1 Dhaka Uttara Camp conducted a raid in the early hours of Friday.
Saidul was arrested from the Bhattara Police Station area of Dhaka Metropolitan. The press release further stated that the accused has been handed over to Sundarganj Police Station for further legal proceedings.
