Four-Year-Old Child Dies in Trawler Capsize in Sunamganj’s Shaldigha Haor

A four-year-old child died in a trawler capsize incident in Shaldigha Haor near Piprakanda village in Sunamganj’s Madhyanagar Upazila. The incident occurred around 9:15 PM on Monday, August 18.

The deceased, Ayan Miya (4), was the son of Samayun Kabir from Achanpur village in the neighboring Jamalganj Upazila. According to Madhyanagar Police Station and eyewitnesses, Samayun Kabir received news of a relative’s death in Kamalpur village, Barhatta Upazila, Netrokona, on Monday evening. To attend the funeral, he rented an engine-powered trawler and set off with 16 family members and relatives. Around 9:15 PM, the trawler reached near the western bank of Shaldigha Haor in Piprakanda village, where it capsized due to strong water currents.

All passengers managed to swim to the shore. Samayun Kabir swam with his son Ayan towards the bank, but Ayan became unconscious before reaching safety. He was rushed to Dharmapasha Upazila Health Complex around 10:30 PM, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Madhyanagar Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Manibur Rahman said, “The trawler capsized in Shaldigha Haor due to strong water currents, resulting in the death of a four-year-old boy. As no complaints were filed, the child’s body was handed over to his family.”
