The incident reportedly stemmed from a dispute over the appointment of the president of Bholain Bazar High School and College in Nangalkot Upazila. A leaked audio recording of the incident, which has gone viral on social media, has been obtained by this reporter. The voice of Education Board Chairman Shamsul Alam has also been identified in the audio.
Local sources report that on May 18 this year, the Cumilla District Commissioner recommended Dr. Mir Abu Saleh Shamsuddin, the elder brother of Shamsuddin Didar, a member of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s press wing, as the president of Bholain Bazar High School and College. The Education Board Chairman forwarded this recommendation to the institution’s head. Soon after, former MP Abdul Gofur Bhuiyan allegedly called the Education Board Chairman, using abusive language and issuing various threats. There are also allegations that he visited the board office in person the next day to intimidate the chairman.
In the viral audio recording, Gofur Bhuiyan can be heard saying in an agitated tone, “I’ll see how big your guts are. I’ll rip out the guts of the person who put you in that position, and I’ll rip out yours too. There’s a limit to insolence.” He further stated, “If you don’t handle this properly, it will harm you. I’ll deal with you. I’m not a nobody; I know the law. That bastard DC, that swine.”
Following the incident, at the special request of the Education Board Chairman, Dr. Mir Abu Saleh Shamsuddin resigned from the presidency post.
Cumilla’s District Commissioner Md. Amirul Kaysar commented, “I haven’t spoken with the former MP. He spoke with the board chairman. Perhaps he abused him.”
Education Board Chairman Shamsul Alam said, “He got agitated over the issue of the presidency of Bholain Bazar High School and College and said various things. I don’t wish to comment further on this matter.”
In response to the allegations, Abdul Gofur Bhuiyan stated, “These are false propaganda against me. I don’t want to say anything more on this issue.”
