A doctor named Mohammad Iqbal was allegedly attacked in Chittagong’s Bakolia area over a dispute related to donations for a house construction project. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in the Rahattarpul area under Bakolia police station. To escape the attackers, Dr. Iqbal sought refuge on the fourth floor of a building and went live on Facebook, pleading for help to save his life. He accused a local BNP leader named Harun of orchestrating the attack.
According to family sources, Dr. Iqbal was constructing a house near Nur Begum Jame Mosque in Rahattarpul. Some local BNP leaders allegedly approached him, demanding to supply bricks and sand for the construction. When Dr. Iqbal refused, they reportedly demanded a donation. Upon his refusal to pay, Harun, along with several others, allegedly assaulted him on Tuesday afternoon. To escape the attack, Dr. Iqbal hid in a room on the fourth floor of a nearby building. During his Facebook Live, he stated, “BNP’s Harun and his goons attacked me. They are searching for me to kill me. I called 999, but the police haven’t arrived yet. Please save me.” In the live video, blood was seen dripping from his eyes, and he appeared visibly terrified and distressed.
Around 9 PM, Dr. Iqbal went to Chittagong Medical College (CMC) Hospital for treatment. He is currently employed at Ibn Sina Hospital, Chittagong.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bakolia Police Station, Ikhtiar Uddin, told reporters around 11 PM on Tuesday that there was a dispute between Dr. Iqbal and a neighbor regarding the land where the house was being constructed. Following a complaint, the Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) had ordered a halt to the construction work. However, as the construction continued, the complainants confronted Dr. Iqbal, leading to a scuffle during which he was injured. Upon receiving news of the Facebook Live plea, police rescued him by forcibly opening the door of the room where he was hiding. The OC clarified that Harun, who was accused of being a BNP leader, is a local community leader. No case had been filed regarding the incident until the time of this report. The OC added that legal action would be taken if the victim files a complaint.
