The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested fugitive accused Jane Alam alias Gaurab Opu in connection with an extortion case involving the residence of a former female Awami League MP in the capital’s Gulshan area.
He was arrested from the Wari area on Thursday night (July 31), confirmed DMP Deputy Commissioner of Media and Public Relations Muhammad Talebur Rahman on Friday (August 1).
Opu is the second accused in a case filed for allegedly demanding Tk 50 lakh in extortion. On July 26, five individuals were detained at the residence of former MP Shamme Ahmed during an attempted extortion.
Shamme’s husband Abu Zafar later filed a case with Gulshan Police Station against six people, including Opu, who managed to flee the scene.
Other accused in the case are Riaj (a central leader of the Democratic Student Council), Ibrahim Hossain Munna (leader of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement), Sakadawn Siam, Sadman Sadab, and a minor. The four adult accused are currently on remand.
