Court Orders Continuation of Trial Against Doctor Ishita in Dhaka

A Dhaka court rejected a revision petition filed by Dr. Ishrat Rafique, also known as Dr. Ishita, against the framing of charges in a case accusing her of impersonating government officials with malicious intent. The decision was made by Judge Farzana Yasmin of Dhaka’s Fifth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Court, paving the way for the trial to proceed in the lower court.

Dr. Ishita was present in court during the hearing. Her lawyer, Sheikh Kaniz Fatema, confirmed the development, stating, “We filed a revision petition in the Sessions Court against the framing of charges in the Magistrate Court. After the hearing, the court dismissed the revision petition and ordered the trial to continue.” The case is currently at the evidence collection stage in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Minhazur Rahman.

According to court sources, Dr. Ishita was arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on August 1, 2021, in Mirpur. The following day, August 2, three cases were filed against her at Shah Ali Police Station under the Digital Security Act, Narcotics Control Act, and for fraud, citing allegations of providing false identities, drug trafficking, and certificate forgery. She was released from prison on October 1, 2022, after 14 months in custody.

On March 3, 2025, Dr. Ishita was acquitted in a case filed under the Narcotics Control Act by Dhaka’s Second Special Tribunal. However, on September 20, 2023, the Cyber Tribunal sentenced her to one year in prison under the Digital Security Act. She appealed this verdict in the High Court on November 22, 2023, and on May 29, 2024, Justice Md. Ashraful Kamal’s single bench acquitted her in that case.
